Deirdre Heekin and Caleb Barber are the noted partners behind Woodstock restaurant Osteria Pane e Salute and La Garagista, a biodynamic farm and winery based in Barnard. Come summer 2017, Heekin's hard-to-find natural wines will gain a new stage in the form of Hart, a pop-up event space in the couple's home vineyard.
Heekin describes Hart as a combination of a bar à vin — French for "wine bar" — and a tavernetta — Italian for "miniature tavern." The newly converted wooden garage holds a small-scale version of a traditional watering hole.
"It can be used as a wine bar or as something akin to an osteria," says Heekin. "It's a simple place, family-run, where you can get a good meal made from local ingredients and a local glass of wine."
Hart will make Heekin's wines easier to come by — kind of. The Barnard spot is open by invitation or appointment only. Subscribers to the Osteria Pane e Salute email newsletter will receive electronic invites to pop-up events, which Heekin aims to hold two to three times per month — "at least for the immediate future," she adds.
An RSVP grants customers a private tasting of the vineyard's coveted pours. Flights or glasses will come with light snacks such as bread, local cheeses and salt-roasted pumpkin seeds.
The next Hart pop-up will feature sips such as the funky Ci Confonde, a 2014 pétillant naturel; and the Loup d'Or, a 2014 limited-release white aged for two years on lees. Wine lovers can join the newsletter at osteriapaneesalute.com.
