Just in time for the 25th annual Burlington Discover Jazz Festival comes 100 Essential Jazz Albums, an online-only "guide for the uninitiated" from the New Yorker. The list was put together by New Yorker editor David Remnick, who says the titles "are meant to provide a broad sampling of jazzclassics and wonders across the music’s century-long history. Early NewOrleans jazz, swing, bebop, cool jazz, modal jazz, hard bop, free jazz,third stream, and fusion are all represented, though not equally."
Among the essentials are two by the legendary Ornette Coleman, who will perform Saturday, June 7, on the Flynn MainStage.
“Beauty Is a Rare Thing: The Complete Atlantic Recordings” is a collection of studio dates from 1959 to 1961, a period that many afficionados consider Coleman's most dazzling and innovative. “Dancing in Your Head,” released in January 1973, is the first with the musicians who would comprise Coleman's electric "free funk" band Prime Time.
