Mrs. Yvette Theresa Ouimet, age 89 years, a longtime Swanton educator died Friday morning December 19, 2014, in the Franklin County Rehab Center.
Born in Swanton on January 28, 1925, she was the daughter of the late Treffle and Colombe (Daignault) Ouimet. She was married to John Claude Ouimet, Sr. who predeceased her on December 31, 1986. Mrs. Ouimet attended Swanton schools graduating from the former St. Annes Academy. She continued her education and received her teaching certificate from the Johnson Normal School and later through the University of Vermont obtained her Bachelor of Science Degree in Education. She began her teaching career in a one room school house in Highgate Center and continued teaching at St. Annes Academy, Missisquoi Valley Union High and Swanton Central Schools retiring after 35 years in the classroom.
Mrs. Ouimet was a devoted and active parishioner of Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary / Saint Louis Parish. She was appointed one of the parishes first Eucharistic Ministers, served several terms on the Pastoral Board as well as teaching many years in the Religious Education Program. She was also a longtime member and past president of the Nativity Ladies of St. Anne. She was also an Associate of the Daughters of the Holy Spirit for many years.
Survivors include her son, John Claude Ouimet, Jr. of Panama City and Fulton NY; two daughters, Patricia Routhier and Janet Lucas and husband Michael all of Swanton; grand and great grandchildren, Vicki and Matthew Kitts and their children, Mathew, Malori, Makayla and Myles; Todd and Lori Ouimet and children, Alex, Jacob and Zachary; Michael and Kimberly Ouimet and children, Mikey and Mason; Laurie and C.J. Smith and son, Tucker; J.P. and Moria Routhier and children, Olivia and Landon; Eric and Melissa Routhier and son Elliot; Patrick Routhier and fiancée Tammy Luman and daughter, Nevaeh; Melissa and Jacob Depuydt and children, A.J. and Drew; Jeremy and Christy Lucas; a brother Real Begnoche of Burlington and a sister, Lorraine Mulheron of Huntington as well as many nieces and nephews.
In addition to her husband John, Mrs. Ouimet was predeceased by a son, The Reverend Dr. J. Lawrence Ouimet on February 16, 2002; five brothers, Leo, Romeo, Arthur, Ronald and Bernard Begnoche and two sisters, Rolande Therrien and Juliette Ouimet.
The Liturgy of Christian Burial will be celebrated Saturday December 27, 2014, at 11 a.m. from The Church of the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary, 65 Canada St., Swanton. Father Michael P. Cronogue, SSE will be the celebrant and homilist. The Rite of Committal and Interment will follow at the Ouimet family lot in St. Marys Roman Catholic Cemetery.
Friends may call at the funeral home on Friday December 26, 2014, from 4 to 7 p.m.
