- William L. Barrett, Sr.
William L. Barrett, Sr., 70, of Williston died Saturday, March 26, 2016 at UVMC in Burlington.
He was born in Gorham, NH on October 13, 1945 the son of Arthur J. and Mildred W. (Morse) Barrett. He attended schools in Gorham and at the age of 15 moved with his family to Portland, ME. He graduated from Deering High School in 1963. On February 22, 1964 he was married in Portland to the love of his life Sandra Hethcoat whom he proposed to after knowing for just three weeks.
In 1966 Bill began his career at IBM in Essex. He retired after 31 years of service. In 2010 he returned to IBM and kept his position through the July 2015 transition to Global Foundries.
In 1967 Bill and Sandy joined the Williston Country Club where he honed his golf skills for the next 40+ years. He was so proud to have three Williston Club Championships (1991, 1996 and 1998) and four holes in one on his golf resume. However, more important to him than these accomplishments was the value he placed on the many friendships built through golf and his career at IBM.
He was a talented woodworker and artist. He could picture something in his mind that he would like to build, draw it on paper and soon it would be finished to perfection. His past and present homes and those of his children are filled with his art, furniture and home improvement projects.
Bill was completely devoted to his family. He coached an Essex Pigtail Ponytail Softball team for nine years while his three daughters participated in the league. He passed his love of golf on to his son, teaching him how to play at age ten. He was a kind, generous man loved and respected by all who knew him.
He leaves his wife of 52 years, Sandy of Williston; his four children, William Jr. & his wife Maggie Mullin of Georgia, VT, Krista & her husband Tim Mashrick of Essex, VT; Jennifer Barrett of Williston and Barby & her husband Jason Moran also of Essex; seven grandsons, Brian and Matthew Barrett, Max, Will and James Mashrick and Jake and Kyle Moran; two brothers; Chuck of South Portland, ME and Michael & his wife Louise of Lewiston, ME; a sister-in-law, Judy Gilbert of Rochester, NH; and his nieces and nephews.
A celebration of Bills life will be held at his home on Sunday, April 17, 2016 from 1:00PM-4:00PM for family, friends, neighbors and all past and present co-workers. Please come, enjoy and share your memories.
