Obituary: Lorain G. Barber

Lorain G. Barber, 90, of South Burlington died on Sunday, January 31, 2016 at the Burlington Health and Rehab Center.

She was born in Shelburne on February 24, 1925 the daughter of Howard H. and Carrie (Rowland) Peterson. She was raised in Shelburne and was a graduate of Burlington High School. On August 30, 1947 she was married in Burlington to Howard C. Barber.

Lorain worked with her husband doing the books for his construction business. After retirement they wintered in Ponce Inlet, FL and summered in South Hero for many years. She was very active and was an avid bowler and a great cook. She loved gardening, playing tennis and swimming and she was an adventurous traveler, visiting Ireland, Hawaii, Florida, Germany and Switzerland. She was also a talented crafter and seamstress. Her girls always had a new handmade dress for the first day of school. She was a decorative painter and hand knitter and tatter (The nearly lost art of hand knotting doilies). She also volunteered at the American Red Cross and the Hospital Gift Shop.

She is survived by her husband of 68 years, Howard C. Barber of South Burlington; three daughters and their husbands, Lynn and Jack Russell, Kathy and James Murray and Carol and Robert Story; four grandchildren, Amy Russell, Brian Russell and his wife Claudia Cerda, Christopher Story and Kate Story; and a brother Jack Peterson; also several nieces and nephews. Besides her parents, she was predeceased by a son, Gary Barber and a brother Rowland Peterson.

There will be no visiting hours. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Thursday, February 4, 2016 at 11:00 am in St. John Vianney Roman Catholic Church with burial to follow in Resurrection Park Cemetery.
