We lost a dear friend, beloved community member and co-worker to cancer on New Year's Day this year. Matthew Thorsen was a legend in this town, taking photographs for Seven Days since its beginning in 1995, he captured Vermonters from every walk of life, documenting bands, makers, artists, and politicians. Matt was 51 and he died at home with his beloved wife, Diane Sullivan, and their cat Darkness.
As news spread of his passing, there has been a huge outpouring of grief, love and memories of Matt on social media. Many people changed their profile picture to a photo taken by Matt and shared stories about him from over the years. WCAX and VPR both played tributes to the iconic photographer and Matt is also gracing the cover of Seven Days this week.
Diane Sullivan has been Matt's muse and partner in crime for the past two decades — she is also the Art Director at Seven Days and often laid out his artwork in the paper. We spent an afternoon with Diane recalling their creative synergy over the years and their last shared moments together. This video also includes outtakes of Matt discussing his artistic process, filmed in October of 2011 and September of 2018.Shooting dates: 10/15-16/2011 & 9/12/2018 & 1/8/19
