'SHE PHOTOGRAPHS'

When: Sept. 1-Feb. 19 2017

What constitutes the female gaze? With 70 images by 30 contemporary artists, this exhibition offers a survey of the institution’s collection of work by women photographers. The show is presented “as a feminine echo of the museum’s major retrospective of photographer Robert Mapplethorpe,” also on view. “Today, photography is diverse and omnipresent in social networks, media and the public space,” says exhibition curator Diane Charbonneau. “This exhibition invites a pause, a special moment for reflection on the images made by women whose works give a contemporary view of our world.” Artists include Sorel Cohen, Janieta Eyre, Nan Goldin, Catherine Opie, Kiki Smith and Marnie Weber. Pictured: “The Shape of a Gesture” by Cohen.
