When: Thu., May 14, 8 p.m. 2015
On Thursday, May 14th, Rising Appalachia brings their Wider Circles album release tour to Higher Ground. Soulful sisters Leah Song and Chloe Smith and their band craft a unique and beautiful sound, illuminated through poetic vocals, spoken word, and an eclectic array of instrumentation including banjos, fiddles, various drums, kalimbas, and beatboxing. Wider Circles was inspired by folk standards and traditional hymns, old mountain odes, and activist anthems that pull equally from the swampy sounds of the bayou, the contemporary twang of the Appalachian mountains, and the beat of a global rhythm. Opening for Rising Appalachia is Vermont's own Ida Mae Specker. Specker is a 3rd generation fiddle player and a rising force in American folk and roots music. A powerhouse on stage, she fiddles, drums and sings simultaneously in a whirlwind of passion and virtuosity. Her live show synthesizes diverse influences and features original lyrics set to old-time melodies with a rock n' roll heartbeat.
