Seven Days publisher and coeditor Paula Routly is the domestic partner of Tim Ashe, who served as president pro tempore of the Vermont Senate from January 2017 until January 2021.
During that time, Routly abstained from involvement in the newspaper's Statehouse and state political coverage. Such stories were edited and assigned by editors Matthew Roy and Candace Page. Routly continued to oversee other stories published in Seven Days.
In an effort to be transparent with readers, Seven Days disclosed Routly's and Ashe's relationship at the end of stories that mentioned him in any significant way.
Ashe is no longer the pro tem (or a senator), so there’s no longer an editorial wall between Routly and Seven Days’ political coverage. Still, Roy and Page continue to oversee and direct the Statehouse reporters.
