Seven Days' Policy on Political Coverage and the Routly/Ashe Relationship

Seven Days publisher and coeditor Paula Routly is the domestic partner of Vermont Senate President Pro Tempore Tim Ashe.

Routly abstains from involvement in the newspaper's Statehouse and state political coverage. Such stories are edited and assigned by editors Paul Heintz and Candace Page. Routly continues to oversee other news beats at Seven Days.

In an effort to be transparent with readers, Seven Days discloses Routly's and Ashe's relationship under the masthead of its print edition — and at the end of stories that mention him in any significant way.

This policy was developed in consultation with several leading media ethicists and journalism professors. Find more on the process that led to this policy here. Questions and concerns should be directed to Heintz and Page.
