Making a Splash

By

This summer, dozens of Winooski kids plunged into the water at Myers Pool in Winooski, courtesy of the Greater Burlington YMCA and Fletcher Allen Health Care, which teamed up to offer free lessons to young swimmers. Seven Days multimedia producer Eva Sollberger recently interviewed Camp Splash kids, parents and instructors for an episode of her weekly web video series, Stuck in Vermont.

Parents talked about the importance of learning to swim - as both a life lesson and a confidence booster in a state full of pools, ponds, lakes and rivers.

"It makes me proud that they're learning a life skill that I don't know how to do," said Nicole Wolfe.

Jess Lukas, an aquatics professional with the GBYMCA, said the three-day Camp Splash's first focus is water safety, but the program also makes sure there's time for fun. Watch the video for clear blue evidence — kids splash, jump, float and noodle around under the instructor's watchful tutelage. Lukas said some kids spend entire afternoons at the pool. And who wouldn't, on those made-for-swimming, sunny summer days?
