- Leona (Granger) DeForge
Leona (Granger) DeForge, 90, daughter of LeoPold and Yvonne (Merchant) Granger, of Winooski passed away on June 11th at Starr Farm Nursing Home after a long illness. She will be extremely missed by her daughter and primary care provider for the past several years, Catherine Eddy, and her husband Gerald of Winooski, her son, Richard and his wife Denise of Milton, granddaughter Stephanie Eddy Niquette and her spouse Elizabeth of South Burlington, grandsons Stephen Eddy of Georgia, VT, Scott Eddy of Eagle Bridge, NY, Richard Jr. and Robert DeForge of Milton, Michael DeForge of Essex Junction and Brian DeForge of St. Albans, six great-grandchildren, several nieces, nephews, cousins and her dear friend, Gail Cameron, who saw her through many troubling and painful times. She was predeceased by her precious granddaughter Nichole DeForge in 1987.
After graduating from Mount St. Mary's Academy in 1942, Leona was employed at Vermont Furniture Factory for more than twenty years where she met her true love, LeoPold (Paul) DeForge to whom she was married in November of 1951. Sadly the Lord called him in May of 2000. Though devastated by the loss of her soul mate, and struggling with a variety of health issues, she retained a smile, sense of humor and compassion, until the end; always the true family matriarch. Leona loved everyone and every living thing, especially her cat, Mittens, whose collar she clenched with every bit of strength during her last hours which is with her on her last journey.
The family would like to thank Kim DeForge Cronin, Jackie Zeno, and the many members of the VNA and CVAA for all their assistance, guidance and support. Additional thanks are extended to the staff of the Chittenden Unit at Starr Farm who, in addition to caring for Leona, did everything possible to support and assist her family during her final days. A very special thank you goes out to Dr. Karen Sokol who cared for Leona over the past several years and provided comfort and encouragement to Leona and her family night and day.
A memorial service will be held at LaVigne Funeral Home and Cremation Service in Winooski on Wednesday June 17th at 9am.
