Side Dishes: Hardwick-area producers open their farms to the public

By now, we all know the story of Hardwick and its thriving food economy. Fewer of us have had the chance to see it in action. With that in mind, the Center for an Agricultural Economy has invited visitors to the first Kingdom Farm & Food Days.

This Saturday, foodies can visit the 17 participating farms by following maps and signs designating properties that are open for tours, or hop on a bike for a group tour led by the Craftsbury Outdoor Center. Farms will host unique events, from llama rides at Agape Hill Farm to milking at Bonnieview Sheep Dairy. Pete’s Greens will offer a localvore potluck from 12:30 to 2:30 p.m.

On Sunday, celebrants convene at High Mowing Organic Seeds for a day of workshops and garden tours. A showcase of local food made from donated ingredients by students from the New England Culinary Institute will begin at 3 p.m. with melon shots, gougères and cured meats, followed by roast beef, beet salad and buttered corn.
