Juan de Marcos & The Afro-Cuban All Stars

When: Sun., June 5, 8-9:30 p.m. 2016

“Shaping the future of Cuban music.”—The Sunday Times Assembled in Havana during the legendary sessions that produced The Buena Vista Social Club, the Afro-Cuban All Stars exhumed 1950s Cuban music and elevated it to an international stage. In 1996, bandleader Juan de Marcos González summoned Cuba’s most venerable players to record the All Stars’ first album, A Toda Cuba le Gusta, immediately prior to the Ry Cooder-produced Buena Vista. Both recordings re-introduced the world to lost luminaries such as Rubén González, Orlando ”Cachaíto” López, and Ibrahim Ferrer. Though time has claimed these voices, González continues to develop his All Stars with a foundational concept: stand up on the roots for creating the future. Led by González, the All Stars now feature the finest contemporary Cuban musicians with an obvious reverence for their music’s rich history. Multigenerational conversations play out between electric guitars, clarinets, fluegelhorns, timbales, voices, and more in layers of simpatico polyrhythms steeped in decades of Havana’s soul. Juan de Marcos, bandleader & vocals / Gliceria Abreu, percussion / Julito Diaz, trumpet & flugelhorn / Yoanny Pino, trumpet & flugelhorn / Yaure Muniz, trumpet & flugelhorn / Laura Lydia Gonzalez, bass & Bb clarinet / Jiovanni Cofino, bass / Caleb Michel, timbale / Tany Allende, congas / Emilio Suárez, vocals / Gliceria Gonzalez, keyboards & vocals / Marquitos “Greko” Crego, piano / Aley Rosell, bongo & cowbell
