Amazon’s “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel” just swept the 2018 Emmy Awards. The period comedy-drama follows the silver-tongued titular character as she tries to break into standup comedy. How did the show’s writers make her routines sound so real? By bringing actual standup comedians into the writer’s room, of course. Among them was acclaimed comic Jen Kirkman. Speaking to Elle in January, she said that some of her favorite scenes to write were the ones in which Maisel bombs. That makes perfect sense, given the comedian’s predilection for self-deprecating humor. Catch Kirkman Thursday through Saturday, October 11 through 13, at the Vermont Comedy Club in Burlington.
