Another day, another chance to root for Vermonters. In this case, to win hefty cash prizes — totalling $50,000 — for improving this pitiful world. Woo-hoo!
Sponsored by Ashoka's Changemakers and Vermont's Green Mountain Coffee Roasters, "Revelation to Action" is an online competition that identifies, and rewards, the most innovative "solutions to building communities" in the Northeast — in other words, New York and the six New England states.
Last week, judges (including Vermont-based author and environmental activist Bill McKibben) winnowed from a field of 358 regional entrants the top 15 finalists, and four of them are in Vermont! They are:
* Yestermorrow Design/Build School’s Semester in Sustainable Design/Build immerses students in sustainable design principles while providing hands-on experience.
* The Committee on Temporary Shelter (COTS) created a Housing Resource Center that streamlines community outreach and homelessness prevention strategies.
* Jr. Iron Chef VT is a statewide competition that gives students an opportunity to gain hands-on experience preparing and cooking nutritious, farm-fresh foods.
* Vermont Food Education Every Day (VT FEED) works with schools, farms, schools and communities to raise awareness about healthy food, the role of farms and farmers, and good nutrition.
Anyone can vote for up to three of their favorite finalists until June 30. (Alas, it can't be all of the above.) The winners will be announced on July 14. Good luck, all!
