How Am I Supposed to Meet People If We Can't Meet Up?

Dear Reverend,

Being solo in quarantine has made me realize I want to get back into the dating game. I want to restart my dating apps, but is anybody actually dating right now? How do you meet people when you're not supposed to meet up with them?

Hannah Solo (female, 27)

Dear Hannah Solo,

Since you can't meet people the old-fashioned way at a bar, club or social event, business has been booming for pretty much all the dating apps out there. It's almost as though they were created with a pandemic in mind.

Before you hop back into the dating pool, if you've got some time on your hands, use it to freshen up your online profiles and photos. I know ... you've got the dreaded quarantine hair. You don't need to take new pictures if you're not feeling it, but if you haven't updated your photos in a while, just pick some more recent ones where you don't look like you've been holed up in a bunker for the past couple months.

Even though you can't go cruising the bars right now, you can still find meaningful interaction from the comfort of your own home. Message people, talk on the phone and maybe have a first face-to-face conversation via Zoom (wear a hat if you must). Not being able to physically meet also saves you from going on a bunch of lame dates. You can get to know the person better virtually and take time to decide whether meeting in the flesh is worth the risk.

If you decide it is, pick an activity that allows six feet of social distancing. Go on a walk by the waterfront. Arrange to have a picnic in a park. Meet up for a cocktail in someone's backyard. Take a little hike. Get a creemee. Any outdoor activity at a safe distance would do the trick.

Extra-big bonus to pandemic dating: You don't have to wonder who's going to make the first move or what "base" you're going to get to, because all the bases are closed for the time being. When and how you want to go about opening that spigot is entirely up to you.

Good luck and God bless,

The Reverend
