They had to jump through some hoops to get it, but Spencer and Mara Welton of Burlington's Half Pint Farm just received approval to build a half-acre hoop house on their leased land in the Intervale.
Because the Intervale is designated as a floodway, any "structures" are rigorously monitored. The duo had to work with the Vermont Agency of Agriculture, FEMA, ANR, the Intervale Center, and the City of Burlington to bring the project into compliance.
Hoop houses protect delicate seedlings and help extend the growing season, so this will mean more food, faster, for Burlington eaters.

Since 2014, Seven Days has allowed readers to comment on all stories posted on our website. While we’ve appreciated the suggestions and insights, the time has come to shut them down — at least temporarily.
While we champion free speech, facts are a matter of life and death during the coronavirus pandemic, and right now Seven Days is prioritizing the production of responsible journalism over moderating online debates between readers.
To criticize, correct or praise our reporting, please send us a letter to the editor. Or send us a tip. We’ll check it out and report the results.
