January marked the one-year anniversary of two major events: President Donald Trump’s inauguration and the Women’s March, one of the largest coordinated protests in world history. Coinciding with these anniversaries was the January 16 release of It Occurs to Me That I Am America: New Stories and Art. This provocative anthology includes original short stories by notable modern authors such as Joyce Carol Oates, Neil Gaiman and Vermont’s Julia Alvarez (pictured). Their fictional narratives consider the ideals of a free, just and compassionate democracy. Editor Jonathan Santlofer moderates a discussion with Alvarez and contributing artists Shahzia Sikander and Jane Kent at the University of Vermont.

Price: Free.
