* Wanda Hines, former director of the Chittenden County Emergency Food Shelf, has resigned to take a job at CEDO, Burlington's Community and Economic Development Office. A search is on for her replacement.
* You can meet your meat's maker at a new butcher shop, the Shelburne Meat Market, on Shelburne Road. According to owner Kim Ready, sausages and marinades are made in-house.
* Iron Chef-style competitions are hot - the food version of reality TV. "Top Chef of Addison County," a benefit for Meals on Wheels, was going to put Chef Dave Fonte neck and neck with a pair of other local chefs this Wednesday at the Basin Harbor Club. Staff members there were unable to say whether Fonte would still participate, given that he no longer works at the club.
* Can't make the Basin Harbor event? On August 1, the Central Vermont Localvores are hosting their own smackdown on the Statehouse lawn to kick off a month of local eating. Ten area chefs will use only indigenous ingredients and compete for top honors in four categories: most creative, most delicious, most Vermont character and most exotic flavor from local ingredients.
