From Netflix’s “Orange Is the New Black” to Amazon’s “Transparent,” transgender characters are more visible than ever on the small screen. In fact, in its 2016 “Where We Are on TV” report, LGBTQ rights organization GLAAD revealed that the number of regular and recurring transgender characters across streaming platforms Amazon, Hulu and Netflix had more than doubled since the previous year. But how well do these characters represent the experiences of real people? Scholar and author Valérie Robin Clayman teams up with YouTube personality Chase Ross for a conversation titled “I’m Supposed to Relate to This?” In it, they examine images from film, literature and the web through the lens of their respective transgender worlds.
