Caroline Smith made a curious turn with her latest record, Half About Being a Woman. The album saw the Minneapolis-based songwriter move from her folk-informed early canon to a sound that fused 1990s New Jack Swing (yes, really) with indie rock. While perhaps jarring to longtime fans, according to Smith the stylistic about face is meant as a two-pronged statement of self-acceptance, both as an “unabashed fan of ’90s R&B, pop and neo-soul” and a “strong, confident, opinionated woman.” Smith plays the Monkey House in Winooski this Sunday, March 2, with songwriter Doug Keith.
