Chicago’s soulful hip-hop band Sidewalk Chalk generously supplied a few meaty musical morsels to chew on ahead of their fourth full-length album, An Orchid Is Born. There’s the retro-futuristic “Trapped,” with its staccato trumpet fanfare and mounting, Stevie Wonder-esque climax. The raging, unapologetic “A Suite for Black Lives” demands answers over a burning bed of horns: “How much you think we can take? We’ve been here for over 200 years, and they still kill us in the motherfucking street,” shouts MC Rico Sisney. And the thunderous “Dig” combines rapid-fire rhymes over an audacious percussive assault. Sidewalk Chalk perform on Wednesday, June 7, at Nectar’s in Burlington as part of the Burlington Discover Jazz Festival. Yonrico Scott and Friends open.
