The Shoe Horn at Onion River
Anyone who puts the words “fashion” and “Montpelier” together in a sentence might be sorely tempted to insert the word “hippie.” It’s true, capital clothing consciousness still tilts toward the casual, if not the frumpy. In recent years, though, several retailers in town have raised the style bar. On Langdon Street, The Shoe Horn — owned, along with Onion River Sports, by Andrew Brewer — has been fitting feet for eight years with shoes, boots and slippers that feel good and look good. You won’t find the flimsy or the stilettoed here. Quality is key, and brands such as Dansko, Merrell and Keen support that. In October, look for the store to double in size and “offer some better-name women’s clothing,” Brewer says, as well as some fashion shoe brands, such as Frye. Meanwhile, fellow Daysie winner ORS is opening a branch for wee ones across the street.
