Give NowCold Hollow Cider Mill — Between the Ben & Jerry’s factory and slew of destination restaurants, Waterbury is a hub of food tourism. But tourists aren’t the only ones who make sure to stop at Cold Hollow Cider Mill.
Sure, Vermonters can grab a jug of the mill’s well-balanced cider at nearly any local supermarket. But they have to go to the source (or resort to mail order) for another apple-scented treat: cider doughnuts.
The light, spiced treats may taste handcrafted, but they’re actually made by a robot. Luckily, the machine works fast: The store sells about 800 of the pastries daily during foliage season. And the product doesn’t suffer from being produced in bulk: The now-defunct Gourmet magazine placed Cold Hollow’s doughnuts among the nation’s four best. Clearly, Vermonters agree.
