“I was 5 years old when I first broke into my mother’s records and played Nat King Cole,” singer Gregory Porter told National Public Radio’s “All Things Considered” in 2013. Now 46, Porter is still an avid fan of the 1940s and ’50s jazz crooner. In fact, his latest album is a tribute to the man whose lyrics he says were “almost like fatherly advice” to him. Released in 2017, Nat “King” Cole & Me is composed primarily of well-known Cole numbers, such as “Smile” and “Nature Boy,” performed in Porter’s powerful baritone voice. The two-time Grammy Award winner serenades concertgoers with his longtime backup band at Dartmouth College in Hanover, N.H.
