Is the neglected built landscape of Vermont an eyesore, or charming? A charming eyesore? Whichever, plenty of Vermonters are attached to the state’s leaning barns and crumbling industrial relics. It’s a familiar impulse for painter Charlie Hunter and photographer Jim Westphalen, whose observational works are currently showing in tandem at Stowe’s West Branch Gallery & Sculpture Park. Hunter works en plein air and “his preferred color [is] a ‘muck’ of his own mixing,” according to a description at West Branch. Westphalen applies his experience in architectural and landscape photography to make crisp, stark homages to obsolescing structures.
