Ode to Mikey

Published June 16, 2008 at 4:47 p.m.

On January 25, 1999, I met Seven Days Art Director Diane Sullivan.  My life would never be the same.

This past Friday I participated in the 5th Annual Michael Sullivan Memorial Open Golf Tournament at Essex Country Club.  This is no ordinary golf tournament.  On this day each year some 100 golfers decorate golf carts, dress in costume and celebrate the life of Mike Sullivan, Diane's brother, with the joy that comes with love of family and great friendships.

While I did not know Mike that well, over the past 10 years I have gotten to know the Sullivan family.  Their passion for life, friends and family is inspiring to me and the way they embrace people and put them at ease is nothing short of magical.  Hitting a golf ball for six hours on a Friday may not sound spiritual to most, but for me gathering with these people on this day for this purpose is like visiting heaven for a day. So here's to Mike and the whole Sullivan family.  I love you all.  Can't wait to tee it up next year.
