John McCardell on 'The Colbert Report'

Comedian Stephen Colbert will meet his match on Thursday when John McCardell makes a guest appearance on "The Colbert Report" at 11:30 p.m. on Comedy Central.

The former president of Middlebury College is an eloquent, dignified and seemingly conservative advocate for lowering the legal drinking age to 18. He founded the Middlebury-based nonprofit, Choose Responsibility, to lobby for the cause, which is none too popular with Mothers Against Drunk Driving.

It's tough to shine in Colbert's shadow. (We've heard through the grapevine that Colbert's "handlers" recommend guests should treat him 'like a drunk 10-year-old.' How apropos.) But McCardell is every bit as enigmatic as his host. Witty, too.

I wrote a cover story about him a year and a half ago, before he became a national-media darling. Click here to read it.
