The local food scene in the Adirondacks has been on the rise for several years, but chefs there have told me they're frustrated that the area still hasn't caught up to Vermont. That may begin to change next year with the opening of a second Healthy Living Market in Saratoga Springs.
Healthy Living founder and CEO Katy Lesser says she's seen the same passion for good food in that area that she's observed in Vermont. “We love what we’re doing: supporting a great community and partnering with local farmers, producers and organizations. Bringing our energy and experience to another wonderful community is something we really want to do,” she says. “Now we’re looking forward to making a strong impact on the city of Saratoga Springs. We’re thrilled about the possibilities the area has to offer, and how we can serve the people there. I’m anxious to get started.”
Construction of the 35,000-square-foot store will likely begin this summer. Like the South Burlington Healthy Living, the new market will feature a café and learning center, as well as a full-service meat and fish counter. A food-education coordinator will teach classes and work with guest presenters, as Lesser's daughter, Nina Lesser-Goldsmith, does on Dorset Street.
Saratoga Springs will get a little healthier — and tastier — when the market opens in January 2013.
