“Voices For the Lake” is an innovative project at the ECHO Lake Aquarium & Science Center using social media to inspire stewardship of the Lake Champlain watershed. At the core of the project is digital storytelling — community members contributing their thoughts, feelings and stories about their waterways on video. The project will culminate in a Google Map mash-up of user-contributed videos, photos and stewardship opportunities. The interactive map will exist online, to be used in an exhibit at ECHO using a touch screen map with video viewing and recording booths. Visitors will be able to manipulate the map to explore the Lake Champlain watershed and to select various layers of content. Voices is also looking at how to engage ECHO visitors through the use of hand-held technologies including video capture and the use of quick response codes to enrich the visitor experience at the aquarium.
