Mary J. Surrell passed away peacefully on Saturday, April 30, 2016, at the Northwestern Medical Center in St. Albans with family and close friends by her side.

Mary was born on February 9, 1922, in Parsons, Kansas to Dewey and Alice (Helie) Stephenson. Mary grew up in Auburn, Maine and graduated from Edward Little High School in Auburn. Shortly after graduation, Mary enlisted in the U.S. Navy. While serving in the military she met her future husband, Joel Surrell. They were married December 24, 1943. Mary was a homemaker for many years before joining the staff at the University of Vermont. She retired in 1987.

Mary was predeceased by her husband Joel, and five siblings. She leaves three sons, Joel, Jr., Gary and Robert; two sisters, Barbara and Nancy and two brothers, Dewey and Leo Paul; many grandchildren and great grandchildren, nieces, nephews and dear friends.

To honor Mary’s wishes, services will be private.
