Marion Theresa (Rich) Barney, age 97, a longtime resident of Spring Street in Swanton Village, died late Saturday evening, June 20, 2015, at the Saint Albans Healthcare and Rehabilitation Center in St. Albans Town.

Born in St. Albans on July 15, 1917 she was the daughter of the late George and Harriett (Bessette) Rich. Marion was a very private person and a devoted homemaker, mother and grandmother. She enjoyed gardening, listening to various radio talk show hosts, watching golf on television and listening to New York Yankees Baseball.

She is survived by her two daughters, Darla Blondo of Swanton and Cheryl Messier of Highgate Springs; two sons and their spouses, Vance (Margaret) Barney of Swanton and Rand (Mary) Barney of Champlain, NY; 14 grandchildren, Charles B. Barney of Waterbury, Rebecca and Gary Marcotte of Barton, Elizabeth and Scott Bessette of Highgate Center, Armanda Bouchard of Swanton, Leslie and Joseph Slavinsky of Collierville, TN, Armand and Gianna Messier of St. Albans, Kevin Barney of St. Albans, Karen Nye of St. Albans, Joseph and Penny Barney of East Highgate, Jeffrey and Andrea Barney of Fairfield, Jason Barney and Christine Eldridge of St. Albans, Joshua and Lori Barney of St. Albans, Jessica and Fritz Larsen of Racine, WI and Deborah and Al Perez of Texas; 15 great grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

In addition to her parents, Marion was predeceased by a son and daughter-in-law, Kermit and Marilyn (Sturgeon) Barney; her former husband, George Kenneth Barney; two sons-in-law, David C, Blondo and Armand R. Messier and her siblings and their spouses, James and Muriel Rich, Ernest and Valerie Rich, and Clara and William Hill.

Private funeral services were held Saturday, June 27, 2015, at 11:30 a.m. from The Kidder Memorial Home. Father Luke P. Austin, pastor of Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary / Saint Louis Parish was the celebrant and homilist. The Rite of Committal and Interment followed at the Messier family lot in Saint Mary’s Roman Catholic Cemetery with Father Austin reading the committal prayers.
