Obituary: Donald Hicks

Donald Charles Hicks, 89, a well-known resident of Gore Road in Bennington died Thursday August 20, 2015 at his residence.

He was born in Bennington, VT September 6, 1925. He was the son of the late Charles and Grace (Percy) Hicks. Don received his education in Bennington and was a 1943 graduate of Bennington High School. Don attended Champlain College and later graduated from Union College in Schenectady, N.Y. in 1950

A World War II veteran, Don served in the 86th Infantry of the United States Army. He served overseas for 12 months in the European Theater and the Asiatic-Pacific Theater of Operations. For his service to his country Don was awarded the Bronze Star.

He married the former Frances Bishop October 20, 1956 at Saint Francis de Sales Church in Bennington.

From 1950 until 1962 Don was employed at Quinlan’s Drug Store in Bennington. He later worked at Hemming’s Motor News in Bennington and had served as Executive Director of the Greater Bennington Chamber of Commerce. Don served as Deputy Commander of the Vermont Veterans Home and later was employed as Business Manager at the Department of Motor Vehicles in Montpelier.

Don served on several Boards including the Village of Bennington where he served as President of the Village from 1959 until 1962. He was also a member of the Town of Bennington Planning Commission from 1989 to 2000 where he served as chairman for 10 years. Don proudly served his town, his state and country.

Don was a 60 year member of the First United Methodist Church of Bennington and a life member of the American Legion Post 13, the VFW Post 1332 and the Montpelier, VT Elks Lodge. He enjoyed reading, listening to Jazz music and going to the Saratoga Race Track in Saratoga, New York but his family was the most important.

Survivors include his wife Frances B. Hicks of Bennington; A daughter, Martha Hicks Robinson of Nashville, Tennessee and a son Charles R. Hicks of Dorset, VT; Two grandchildren, Katelyn Robinson and Bridget Robinson Obrymba; A great grandson, Isaac John Obrymba and several nieces, nephews and cousins. He was pre-deceased by a son John Donald Hicks, a granddaughter, Ellen Bindman Hicks, three brothers, Arthur, Earl and Harold Hicks and a sister Marion Rivers.

The funeral will be held from the Mahar and Son Funeral Home on Saturday August 22, 2015 at noon with Rev. Richard McSherry officiating.

Friends may call at the Mahar and Son Funeral Home on Saturday from 11:00 a.m. until the time of the service.

The burial will take place in the family lot in Park Lawn Cemetery where military honors will be offered.
