Cross-Country Skiing
While many winter skiers chase mountain thrills beyond Burlington, cross-country athletes can slide to their heart's content within city limits. After a big storm, you'll see them gleefully gliding down Church Street or making first tracks on the bike path. To escape the hustle and bustle of downtown, head for the Intervale, a 360-acre span of farmland and recreational space stretching along the Winooski River to the Ethan Allen Homestead. Find three miles of peaceful groomed trails when weather permits — and special Wintervale events throughout the season offering free ski and snowshoe rentals, kids' activities, food and drink, and a toasty bonfire.

This year, the Flynn Center for the Performing Arts welcomes its first-ever community artist-in-residence: violinist and composer Daniel Bernard Roumain. Over 10 months, he'll visit Burlington for five weeklong residencies designed to "present a view of a world made richer through diversity," according to the Flynn. The Haitian American composer, artist and activist began in October with 24-Hour Protest Song, a groundbreaking, full-day community performance on the steps of Burlington City Hall. He continues through the winter with an intimate solo performance and a collaboration with Vermont contemporary chamber group TURNmusic.

Ice skating outdoors is one of winter's simple pleasures, especially if snowflakes are falling and your breath is forming puffy clouds in the cold air. When the weather cooperates, Burlington maintains rinks in five city parks: Battery, Calahan, Lakeside, Roosevelt and Starr Farm. Neighbors gather at them for games of ice hockey or leisurely loops and figure eights. Some of the rinks offer free skates to borrow; others have evening skating under lights. Be sure to stay off the ice if it's not fully frozen; on those warmer days, head inside for public skating at Leddy Ice Arena in the city's New North End.

Cette année, le Flynn Center for the Performing Arts accueille son tout premier artiste communautaire en résidence : le violoniste et compositeur Daniel Bernard Roumain. Pendant dix mois, il visitera Burlington à l'occasion de cinq résidences d'une semaine visant à « présenter une perspective d'un monde rendu plus riche grâce à la diversité », selon le Flynn. Le compositeur, artiste et activiste d'origine haïtienne-américaine a commencé en octobre avec 24-Hour Protest Song, une performance révolutionnaire de toute une journée dans la communauté, sur les marches du Burlington City Hall. Patiner à l'extérieur l'hiver est une vraie féérie, en particulier s'il neige et que votre respiration crée d'épais nuages de vapeur dans l'air. Lorsque la météo coopère, Burlington entretient les patinoires de cinq parcs urbains : Battery, Calahan, Lakeside, Roosevelt et Starr Farm. Les gens s'y rassemblent pour disputer un match de hockey, faire quelques figures ou tourner autour de la patinoire. Certaines patinoires offrent la location gratuite de patins, tandis que d'autres sont éclairées le soir. Évitez de vous élancer sur la glace si elle n'est pas entièrement gelée.
