When the Euro Gourmet Café moved out of its lower Main Street location, folks who work on the Burlington Waterfront waited eagerly to see who would move in. After standing vacant for several months, the spot is now home to another Bosnian-owned biz, this one called Euro Corner.
The new eatery, which opened last week, features a wide array of pastries, sandwiches and daily lunch specials. It's the brainchild of Darko Vujanovic, a 27-year-old entrepreneur with a culinary degree earned in his native land.
Vujanovic prepares most of the food on site - with the exception of the breads and pastries, which are fresh made at his family's Winooski business, A Taste of Europe. In addition to their baked goods - Amir Jusufagic buys their bread for the kebabs he sells on Church Street - the Vujanovics offer hundreds of grocery items imported from Europe, both at their store and on the web.
At Euro Corner, Vujanovic aims to marry the Old- and New-Country culinary tastes. Some of his sandwiches combine ajvar - a flavorful vegetable spread made from peppers, garlic and often eggplant - and ketchup. And his "Mediterano sandwich" comes with both feta and American cheese. But Euro-purists will find sandwiches to their taste here, too.
By offering both types of cuisine, Vujanovic hopes to "have all types of people in. If you're American, you're welcome. If you're European, you're welcome. If you want ham or roast beef, we have it. If you want to try something you've never tried, you can."
