The steel pan is a somewhat marginalized instrument. Also known as the steel drum, it rarely appears outside of Caribbean music, making its signature metallic reverberations synonymous with beach culture and reggae. American virtuoso Jonathan Scales defies audience expectations by incorporating the instrument into funky avant-garde compositions.
