I almost turned this movie off in the first 15 minutes, when the titular protagonist (Christopher Abbott) was just rambling around listening to his headphones, drinking and vaguely attempting to dance. That goes on for a while, and director Josh Mond keeps the handheld camera tight on James because, yes, this is another NYC indie film about an aimless, privileged millennial.

I had mixed feelings about this choice to depict the doubles as starting fairly similar and progressively bleeding into each other. On the one hand, it reduces the dramatic tension between them, and the opportunities for Gyllenhaal to show his range.

Through his exceedingly low-key performance as Aaron, Brice portrays the little dance we go through whenever we meet an over-friendly stranger: Is he a threat, or just a harmless, puppyish eccentric? Should we trust him and accept his overtures, or does he creep us the hell out?

It's a message that could have felt obvious and scolding — yet doesn't, because Mbatha-Raw really is more luminous without all the drag. The music-industry scenes feel real enough to convince us that being an over-managed star property actually would be pretty awful, even if the job comes with a mansion in the Hills.

Verdict: God Help the Girl is lovely visual and musical wallpaper, but for me, there just wasn't enough there there. While Murdoch's script had cutting, insightful, even funny moments, I wanted more of them.
