Burlington City Arts is now accepting nominations for the 14th Barbara Smail Award, an arts prize awarded to a Vermont-based mid-career artist who "has a desire to expand his or her creative experience, has displayed enthusiastic support of his or her peers, and has been under-recognized in the community either through exhibition or other awards and programs."
The award was created in 2003 in memory of local painter Barbara Smail, who was a founding member of the Firehouse Gallery (now BCA Center). She died in 2001. Smail Award artists receive a $1,500 stipend, approximately $1,000 worth of classes and/or studio time in BCA's facilities, and a culminating exhibition at BCA Center. 2015's winner,
Clark Derbes, will open his
exhibition on April 15. Past winners include
Diane Gabriel, Peter Gallo,
Catherine Hall,
Kat Clear, Gregg Blasdel,
Kate Donnelly and
Sumru Tekin.
Nominations will be accepted through January 29. For more info, visit the
BCA website.
