Emily Raboteau

When: Thu., Feb. 13, 4 p.m. 2014

Of Emily Raboteau's Searching for Zion: The Quest for Home in the African Diaspora, Dave Eggers wrote, "I doubt there will be a more important work of nonfiction this year." Part political meditation, part soul-searching journey, the 2013 award-winning memoir details the New York City-based writer's desire to reconcile her biracial identity. Beginning in Israel, where she meets African American Jews, Raboteau spends the next 10 years traveling to Jamaica, Ethiopia, Ghana and the American South. In each place, she strives to make connections between her own life and transported black communities in search of the Promised Land.
