WRONG ADDRESS
We are renting in Essex and thought we would give AJ's a try. Did you know that there is a Railroad St AND a Railroad Ave in Essex Junction. You have the restaurant listed on STREET and I found that but not restaurant. It is on AVENUE and is a delight. I had hash and eggs. I like my eggs soft poached and seldom get them that way, AJ's got them just right. Will go back for other meals too. Food: 5 Ambiance: 3 Service: 5

A Down-Home Diner
My husband and I really enjoy having a quiet, simple breakfast at AJ's. We love the relaxed atmosphere, the friendly waitstaff, and we like the fact that most of their patrons seem to already be acquainted. It's this fact alone that gives AJ's the homey-family-like feeling when you enter and seat yourself. The food, of course, is excellent, but can be a bit greasy. But, it's all prepared fresh - seemingly no pre-packaged stuff - and provides a comfortable, sit-down meal anytime. My only real complaint is that their hours tend to fluctuate from their posted times, and it seems that, whenever I want to eat at AJ's, they're closed! But, trust me, they're worth the wait. Good soup!
I had a very good homemade fish chowder here. My husband really enjoyed his perfectly prepared eggs and hash. The menu is pretty basic - don't expect yuppie food, but if you want a competent, simple, and affordable meal, this is your place! Food: 3 Ambiance: 3 Service: 4

My wife and I stopped there for lunch today 2/19/2015. Had been to their old location years back once and never went back due to so-so cooking.

We tried again today and it seems worse then the last time we eat there.

Waitress gabbed for 10 minutes w/ someone else before finally bringing us our water.

Ordered double cheese burger and fries. Burgers were ordered medium-rare and came well-done. Fries were that dark brown color only well used frying oil can give them The fries had little flavor due to the old oil they keep re-using.

Really a lousy experience there and my wife and I can't figure out how they stay in business.

We do not plan to go back there until someone in charge figures out how to manage the food prep and staff better.

Rarely do we ever write a complaint (last one was 8 years ago), but, AJs really needs a wake-up call. This restaurant just doesn't cut it at all.

Could not get a hello or even a menu!!!
It was a freezing Saturday and my young son had just finished playing several hours of hockey. The only good thing that came of our "stop" at AJ's was that we got warm. No one ever even greeted us- we sat at a table for 15 minutes and watched the waitress deliver food, coffee, and small talk to surrounding tables, and take a food order from the next table without a word to us. The kicker was when she walked on by with the menus in her hand from said neighboring table and deposited them in the menu holder at the back counter still without even a glance at us! No acknowledgement and no menus is a pretty good indication of things to come, and with a young child with us, we didn't feel like goofing around. We got up and walked out. And that's a hard thing to do with a kid! Food: -1 Ambiance: 1 Service: 1

Don't bother
I have been there several times because I live in the area. The food is fair. What really bothered me was the Ladies bathroom was filthy. Also they are closed more than they are open. Food: 2 Ambiance: 1 Service: 1
